Gabor Maté shares a deeply personal story about his own childhood to illustrate the long-term effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Born during World War II to a Jewish family in Hungary, Gabor describes how his mother, overwhelmed by the stresses of antisemitism, Nazi imperialism, and the fear of raising a child in such conditions, struggled to bond with him. After his birth, she remained unhappy and even gave him away for six weeks, leaving Gabor with the deep-seated belief that he was unlovable and undesirable. This early experience drove him to become a workaholic doctor, always seeking validation through his professional role. He realized that while people may not love him, they would at least want what he could do for them, which became a substitute for being lovable and desirable.
Gabor connects his personal experience to the ACEs study, which demonstrates that the more childhood adversities a person faces, the greater their risk for addiction and other mental health challenges. He explains that ACEs are fractures in a child’s attachment relationship with their parent, leading to long-lasting psychological wounds. Gabor expands on the original list of ten ACEs, arguing that factors like racism, poverty, and the absence of positive experiences in a child’s life should also be considered as significant contributors to trauma and addiction risk. His approach emphasizes the need to understand the root causes of trauma to foster healing and resilience.

Dr. Gabor Mate covers the ACE study findings in brief. Its shocking that trauma is so widespread. It's good that we are recognising it as that is always the first step.

Dr Gabor Mate's work is so powerful. Finally there is some-one talking about this and it just makes sense, and you feel like 'yes, you have just made sense of this stuff that I have been unable to make sense of for all these years.'. Incredible.

I've just been introduced to Gabo Mate's work and am blown away by the impact of even a short video like this. It's so powerful and really hit home. At the end of the five minutes I was crying. Especially at the end when he mentioned "good things that should have happened that didn't happen" - I'd never thought of that as an ACE but it's so true. He said that most people remember the bad stuff but not the good stuff that didn't happen - I had no problem at all thinking of a whole load of them....
I'm so looking forward to delving more into this stuff and what to do to deal with it all. I've known about most of these things mentally for 20 years and doing so many different things to "clear" the trauma using so many different modalities, and yet they linger because I haven't 'got it' experientially.
Given the impact this short video had, I feel that I've found a person and an organisation (thank you wholehearted.org) that will help me to work through these issues and the emotions evoked in videos like this.

This is powerful stuff, just like the rest of Gabor's material! I believe this was so important to hear and it's not spoken about enough. I believe if more people could learn about ACE it would help so much!
